emerging

last night I went to Sanctus1 and took my vicar, as he is going to be doing stuff on emerging/fresh expressions when he leaves us in the summer.

It was different to any sanctus1 services I have been to, but it was still excellent for making me think about emerging church and the implications for it.

I am well aware that I am enabled to think more about stuff when I go to different forms of church but as I was saying last night to David on the way home, what worries me about some forms of emerging church is where is the sense of shared history and tradition. It is all well and good to do new stuff, and we need more of it, to reach the parts that aren't being met by 'normal' church. BUT where is the accountability, where is the sense of belnging to something that is far bigger than the little world we inhabit.

Martyn Joseph says in his song 'Dolphins' that history keep on repeating herself, but unless there is a history we are not going to learn from mistakes, and if we ignore our shared history we are ignoring a huge part of christianity that has much to teach us!!

my MA dissertation is going to be looking at Sanctus1 and probably Holy City in Glasgow and why people go to them. I know why I go, but I am interested in what is happpening in these services that meets needs that are not being met elsewhere...
